Overview Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust that orbit the Sun. When frozen, they are the size of a small town. When a comet's orbit brings it close to the Sun, it heats up and spews dust and gases into a giant glowing head larger than most planets. The dust and gases form a tail that stretches away from the Sun for. The solid, core structure of a comet is known as the nucleus. Cometary nuclei are composed of an amalgamation of rock, dust, water ice, and frozen carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ammonia. As such, they are popularly described as "dirty snowballs" after Fred Whipple's model. However, many comets have a higher dust content, leading them to be called "icy dirtballs".

Comets with periods as long as thousands or even millions of years come from a very distant region of the solar system. This region is called the Oort cloud. It is ab, AU from the Sun (50,–, times the distance from the Sun to Earth). Summary. Comets Book Contents Chapter Contents. A brief history of comets. Thousands of years ago, the motion of comets seemed erratic and unpredictable compared to the motion of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, and the erratic behaviour of comets led people to assume that they originated from inside of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Hazards Due to Comets and Asteroids marks a significant step in the attempt to come to grips with the threats posed by such phenomena. It brings together more than one hundred scientists from around the world, who draw on observational and theoretical research to focus on the technical problems related to all aspects of dealing with these. Comet, a small body orbiting the Sun with a substantial fraction of its composition made up of volatile ices. Comets are among the most-spectacular objects in the sky, with their bright glowing comae and their long tails. Comets can appear at random from any direction as they move in .
