      THE BEGINNING. The events that led to the production of Big Little Books® in the s were a significant part of the Western Publishing Company’s history. Edward Henry Wadewitz, born in , was the son of German immigrants. He grew up in Waubeka, Wisconsin and Iron Mountain, Michigan. Western short stories have also been among America’s favourites. A.H. Lewis (c. –), a former cowboy, produced a series of popular stories told by the “Old Cattleman.”Stephen Crane created a comic classic of the genre with “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky” (), and Conrad Richter (–) wrote a number of stories and novels of the Old Southwest.

      Examples of revisionistic Westerns are Little Big Man () and Dances With Wolves (). Wayne was also a big star in the film True Grit. This classic Western was directed by Henry Hathaway and told the story of a drunken American marshal who helped a young woman track down her father's killer in Indian territory. The movie was remade. Western Story Magazine. On J , the first all-western pulp, Street & Smith's Western Story Magazine, arrived on September 5th, and priced at $, the inaugural issue promised quality entertainment with "Big Clean Stories of Outdoor Life.".
